Rector’s Blog

Friday 6 March

Last night saw our final Parents’ Evening of the academic year and it was a really good opportunity to meet with 4ths parents and be able to update them all on the progress that their sons and daughters are making. Parents’ Evenings are an important aspect of what we do at the school and the conversations that are had, and the relationships that we hope we build, are very important to the ultimate success and happiness that our students enjoy. As a Rector, who is currently engaged in creating battle plans for once the dreaded coronavirus takes hold, it was amazing, uplifting, but still slightly worrying, to see the warmth of the greetings, welcomes, hugs and handshakes that typify a night like last night! I offered my elbow many a time for a friendly nudge and I fear this may be our standard form of greeting for a while. We are busy educating our students about the necessary measures required to contain the spread of the virus and posters are going up around school. Further information can be found HERE.

Congratulations to our musicians, who have been competing in the Edinburgh Competition Festival and well done in particular to Olivia M, Lucy B and Isla H-K who all came away with awards. It's certainly been a very busy few weeks of sport (rugby aside!) and we are all hoping the Glasgow 7s tournament goes ahead this weekend. Congratulations are due to the many players who have braved poor weather and tough training conditions to keep engaged in their sporting programmes. Rebecca G swept all aside her on the way to winning the 400m at the Scottish Under 20 Championships (a hugely impressive achievement for an athlete in the 4ths!) We also had some great performances at the Scottish School Cross Country Championships and well done to Munro L, Logan LP, Harry N, Carl C, Finlay T and Rory W, as well as Martha B, Heidi LP, Jenna P and Jessica M, all of whom ran superbly. The boys' Under 13 team won the competition. We have also had lots of hockey tournaments this week and congratulations to the U14 girls who won the plate competition in the East District S2 tournament. This week we are hosting some visitors from Vancouver Island, Canada, who are coming to Scotland on rugby tour. My sincere thanks to all those parents who are offering homestay opportunities for our visitors. These are players from my previous school at Shawnigan Lake and so I am particularly keen for a victory on Monday afternoon! I am delighted to announce that Mark Appleson has secured the prestigious post of Director of Sport at Fettes College for September. Although this is a huge loss to the school, it is a very exciting post for Mr Appleson and I am sure he will be excellent in the role. We have already begun the search for a new Director of Rugby and should have further news by the end of this term.

With best wishes
