Uniform
These guidelines are intended to clarify the school uniform and dress code. It is our expectation that all pupils will respect the intention behind our uniform and dress code, and that pupils show respect for the atmosphere in which they learn. We wish all pupils to take pride in their appearance and certainly it helps pupils to acknowledge the distinction between life at home and at school.
General Guidance
The Edinburgh Academy reserves the right to insist on the school uniform being worn as per these guidelines. Purchase of items that do not comply may result in costly re-purchasing.
- Pupils should be neat in appearance.
- Correct school uniform and blazers (or JS winter coat) should be worn in school and whenever travelling to and from school.
- Only those items specified on the uniform list will be permitted.
- All items of uniform and personal belongings should be clearly marked with the owner’s name.
- Shirts should be tucked in and collar and cuff buttons fastened.
- Ties should be worn correctly fitted up to shirt collar.
- T-shirts, if worn under shirts, should be plain white.
- Kilt length should be no shorter than just above the knee.
- Hair styles should be appropriate for school, as should hair fasteners. Extremes of hairstyle, hair colour and hair length are not acceptable.
- Long hair should be tied back off the face and should not obscure vision – it should be smart in appearance.
- Jewellery should be discreet and minimal. Only one pair of plain gold/silver stud earrings may be worn. Earrings should only be worn on the ear lobe and no other form of piercing is acceptable. No more than one ring or bracelet may be worn. No other jewellery is permitted except that worn for religious reasons.
- Coloured nail varnish is not to be worn and make-up should be discreet.
- Students should be clean shaven.
Health and Safety
- Hair should be tied back especially in practical subjects as directed by supervising member of staff.
- PE and Games: jewellery should not be worn.
- In the Senior School, a plain dark-coloured overcoat or jacket is permitted when the weather is poor but should be worn over full school uniform. In the Junior School, children should wear the EA Cagoule over the Blazer in summer months, and the EA Winter Coat in winter months.
- Plain dark blue or black boots can also be worn when it is very wet weather.

Nursery
Clothing
The Nursery includes both indoor and outdoor spaces. For this reason, practical and easily washable clothes should be worn. We do provide aprons but, despite our best efforts, children sometimes get paint, glue or clay on their clothes. If children are anxious about getting dirty they may be reluctant to participate in valuable learning experiences. We encourage the building of independence skills and therefore having elasticated waists compared to zips and buttons can be helpful for your child, also velcro or slip on shoes compared to laces. We would recommend that each child keeps a clean spare set of clothes on their peg. Any wet clothes will be placed in a plastic bag on your child’s peg in the cloakroom.
Please provide a bag containing nappies for any children who still require these (we would ask not pull-ups unless toilet training), wipes and nappy sacks. These will be stored for your child within our nursery room. If your child is potty-training we would encourage more than one set of spare clothing to be provided.
Here is our list of recommended items. Please ensure everything is clearly named:
- suitable shoes for play and PE lessons
- wellies (needed all year round)
- waterproof trousers (Willow room preference is for all-in-one suit, older children separates)
- waterproof jacket (see above)
- sun hat
- additional warm layers
- warm hat, gloves and scarf
- spare clothes
