Drama

Drama at The Edinburgh Academy is a vibrant, dynamic and inspiring part of school life, offering pupils the opportunity to discover their voice, grow in confidence and experience the thrill of live performance. From Geits (P7) to 3rds (S2), pupils enjoy energetic, skills-based lessons that develop acting technique, production knowledge and a broad understanding of theatre, while 4ths (S3) to 7ths (S6) are guided through National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Drama, studying both classic and contemporary plays and achieving excellent results year after year.

Our classrooms are creative hubs where pupils explore a wide range of performance styles, learn how to shape character and story, experiment with directing and design, and build invaluable skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking and self-evaluation.

Families are regularly welcomed into our theatre to experience an exciting and diverse programme of performances, showcasing the outstanding work created in lessons, from powerful scripted productions to original devised pieces that pupils have imagined, written and brought to life themselves. There is nothing quite like the energy of a live audience, and our pupils rise to the occasion with creativity, courage and flair.

We are passionate about ensuring our pupils experience the magic of live theatre beyond the school gates. Regular theatre trips immerse them in high-quality professional productions, sparking inspiration and deepening their understanding of performance at the highest level. Our senior pupils are also given the unforgettable opportunity to travel to London’s West End, where they witness world-class productions and take part in workshops led by leading theatre practitioners an experience that broadens horizons and raises aspirations.

Drama at EA is not only about performance; it is about leadership and initiative. Pupils develop the confidence and skill to direct scenes, lead rehearsals and run drama workshops and games, building invaluable leadership and communication skills that will serve them for life. We actively connect with the wider theatre industry, welcoming professional actors, directors and creatives into school to deliver dynamic workshops, while also venturing behind the scenes for backstage tours and specialist workshops. These experiences give pupils real insight into the professional world of theatre and allow them to develop their skills and knowledge far beyond the classroom.

Beyond the curriculum, Drama truly comes alive through our rich co-curricular programme: annual Senior plays or musicals, Junior productions, whole-school summer shows and an exciting inter-Division competition give pupils regular opportunities to perform on stage or work behind the scenes in lighting, sound, set design and stage management.

We are also proud of our exceptional success in preparing pupils for LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) examinations, delivered by our in-house tutor. LAMDA courses offer focused, one on one or small-group training in acting, public speaking and performance, helping pupils to master voice, movement, characterisation and interpretation of text. Pupils work on monologues and duologues, LAMDA is not only for the extrovert performer; performances can even be in Mime, making it an accessible and transformative experience for all personalities. The result is often a remarkable boost in confidence, empathy, resilience and presence, with Grades 6–8 carrying valuable UCAS points (6–30). There is a separate charge for LAMDA tuition.

Above all, Drama at EA is about belonging, bravery and brilliance a place where pupils are encouraged to take creative risks, support one another and experience the unforgettable excitement of bringing stories to life.
