Drama

At EA, our Drama Department is a hub of creativity, collaboration, and artistic excellence. We are committed to delivering an engaging curriculum to the highest standard, ensuring that every pupil develops essential skills in performance, communication, and critical thinking. Pupils in Geits (P7) – 3rds (S2) receive robust and exciting lessons that encourage their development of Drama skills, Production skills and widen their experience of theatre. 4ths (S3) – 7ths (S6) are led through National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Drama qualification, pushing their knowledge and understanding through the study of classic and contemporary plays. We attain excellent results, year on year.

Our drama program is designed to nurture the confidence and creativity of all students, whether they aspire to the stage or simply wish to build transferable skills that will benefit them in any walk of life. Pupils explore a variety of performance styles, and gain hands-on experience in acting, directing, and technical theatre. Lessons focus on developing expressive skills, collaborative problem-solving, and the ability to evaluate and analyse themselves, peers, and professional work.

Beyond the classroom, our department offers a vibrant range of extra-curricular opportunities. Pupils can audition for our annual school productions, ranging from senior plays such as ‘The Crucible’, our junior productions such as ‘Grimm Tales’ or our whole-school summer musicals such as ‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘Guys and Dolls’. For those interested in the technical side of theatre, our backstage team provides training in lighting, sound, set design, and stage management. We also run trips to professional theatres and host workshops with visiting industry professionals, offering students an inspiring glimpse into the wider world of performing arts. We offer further opportunities through the delivery of LAMDA qualifications by our in-house tutor, which culminates in bi-annual exams which at Grade 6–8 equate to UCAS points.

We take pride in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every student feels encouraged to take creative risks and express themselves. We ensure that our students not only achieve academic success but also grow as confident, responsible, and successful individuals.

Whether you're a budding actor, a backstage enthusiast, or simply curious about the world of drama, our department has something for everyone. Come and discover the magic of theatre at Edinburgh Academy!
