Charles was educated at the EA from 1966–76, has a business diploma from Bradford School of Management, and enjoying retirement despite being asked to do the odd bit of work. He chairs the London Branch of the Edinburgh Academical Club, and keen to develop its presence with more events and an active social media presence.

Charles worked in sport at the BBC for 34 years. Joining in 1982 he was often asked by Radio Scotland’s leisure programme to report on subjects as diverse as birdwatching, dry stone dyking and making shepherd’s crooks! Moving to London in 1987 he worked at many big events from Olympic Games and World Cups, and edited TV series on local football and Rugby League. Latterly its head of regional sport, he was responsible for the sports output on BBC local radio, regional TV and online across England.

Charles was the recipient of the first ‘Academical of the Year’ award in 2021 for his work at the EAC.
